Warner Bros. and DC Films’ upcoming Harley Quinn spinoff movie will be penned by screenwriter Christina Hodson. This news comes by way of TheWrap, who reiterates prior reports that the Harley Quinn / Birds of Prey movie won’t focus solely on Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, but rather also feature an array of other key female characters from the DC Comics universe. In addition to the Harley Quinn movie, Hodson is also behind the script for Paramount’s lower-budget Bumblebee film. According to Deadline, the studio is quite pleased with the Hodson’s current draft for the upcoming Transformers spinoff, and will soon be sending it out to directors. Transformers: Bumblebee is set to hit theaters on June 8, 2018, following the debut of Michael Bay’s fifth mainline installment, dubbed Transformers: The Last Knight, which opens June 23.

With the Fantastic Beasts series expanding into five movies, Warner Bros. is sticking with director David Yates to helm the remaining four films. Yates told The Hollywood Reporter that, for now, he has committed to the entire prequel series,  and he doesn’t see at it as a daunting task at all. Yates directed the last four Harry Potter films along with the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. “I love making films, and I’ve got a great team, all of whom are like family,” Yates told THR. “I only look at it movie to movie.” The director also briefly touched on the sequel and J.K. Rowling’s script. Yates is promising that the second film will “feel so different from” the first one, and that it’ll be haunting and darker. But, it will still maintain the levity the Harry Potter franchise is known for. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be released on November 18. The sequel is expected to hit theaters on November 16, 2018. It will be set in Paris, and will reportedly feature a younger Albus Dumbledore and his rival Gellert Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp.

“More Intimate” Marvel Movies

Posted: November 3, 2016 in Movie

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has discussed what could happen to the Marvel Cinematic Universe following The Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled follow-up, hinting that the movies could become (or return to) a “more intimate” style. Asked by Vulture where the MCU could go from Infinity War’s huge crossover (the film will feature Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and very probably Spider-Man and Nick Fury alongside the Avengers), Feige said: “I think it’s possible to have more intimate movies after that, or to have more interesting, unexpected combinations of characters after that, absolutely. It never is intentionally about ‘being even bigger […] To us, it’s less about continuing to go bigger with spectacle — although in some cases, we will — and more about continuing to go deeper with those character interactions. Feige made clear that he doesn’t see more character-driven Marvel films as necessarily the same thing as being less action-driven: “Arguably, one of the biggest scenes we’ve ever had in a movie was the airport battle in Civil War, and there weren’t world-ending stakes in that scene, there wasn’t an asteroid smashing into a city in that scene, but there was a conflict between the characters that made you feel something.” Feige also discussed how future films may feature meetings between characters that fans won’t have anticipated, saying, “particularly in Infinity War and the movie after that, there are… unexpected team-ups.” That seems to be based on the existing comic book stories the films draw from, and Feige explained that the stories won’t match up perfectly: “Knowledge of the comics can be both beneficial to fans anticipating things, and also misleading. So you’ll have to see.” Marvel’s The Avengers: Infinity War is due for release on May 4, 2018.
